
The turtle Palawan, Philippine endemic species is threatened with extinction because of Chinese poachers.
This animal is used in cooking, traditional medicine or as a pet by the inhabitants of the Middle Kingdom.
The reptile, found only on the west side of the island of Palawan, is classified as a species in critical danger of extinction in the ranking of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
More than 4000 turtles caught
4000 freshwater turtles were recently captured in the region, a figure rising. Last October 18, the island's authorities have managed to save 20 thousand turtles from poachers were caught on the Philippine island.
Poaching is a crime punishable by six to twelve years in prison. The sentence can be avoided against the payment of a deposit. "The sentence is too small compared to the huge profits," said Adelina Villena, in charge of sustainable development on the island of Palawan.
